ROB BADGER'S BIO
For over 50 years, Rob has created images of the natural world for a wide variety of clients, collectors and art buyers. His extensive collection of nature photographs (geographically and seasonally diverse) range from dramatic, complex and colorful, to soft and subtle.
His mastery of light and color, and his ability to emotionally portray the essence of a place in time has won him international awards for his Antarctica series, and “Best in Journalism” for his evocative environmental photography, work that is simultaneously beautiful and disturbing.
Rob’s nature and environmental images have appeared in calendars, books, newspapers and national and international magazines, including The New York Times and Washington Post, TIME, OMNI, Better Homes and Gardens, Pacific Horticultural, National Wildlife, Sunset, Sierra, Wilderness Society and World Watch Magazines.
As a photographer for The Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, and The Trust for Public Land, Rob has completed more than fifty project assignments devoted to protecting and restoring our vanishing natural areas. In 1998 he was chosen by the Center for Russian Nature Conservation, as one of only three American photographers, to document the pristine beauty of Russia’s vast and virtually unknown system of nature preserves in European Russia and Siberia. One of his projects, funded in part by a generous grant from the Institute of Noetic Sciences, documented the unique beauty and diverse ecosystems of northern California’s endangered National Wild and Scenic Eel River, and the environmental issues impacting this state’s third-largest watershed.
Selected clients include AT&T, Audi, CNN/Turner International, Chase Manhattan Bank, Chevron, the EPA, Mercedes Benz, The National Park Service, Save the Bay; Simon Schuster, the US Forest Service, and Coastal Living and Southern Outdoors Magazines.
After many years of working on individual assignments, Rob and Nita combined their talents to create The WinterBadger Collection. They have focused on creating healing art that enhances spaces. Individually and together theyhave received commissions from Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco and Alameda County Art Commissions, Utah Arts Council and the Irvine Foundation. Rob's work has been purchased for the California State Building, San Francisco; Fawcett Corporate Art Collection, Tulsa OK; Fireman’s Fund Insurance, Novato CA (22 prints); James Irvine Foundation, San Francisco; Mercy Retirement/Care Center, Oakland CA; Synopsis Corporation, Mountain View CA; and the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund.
Rob lives in the Sausalito, California with photographer Nita Winter. In 1998 they began a collaborative project photographing wildflowers (and their environments) on public lands. Their magnificent and ever-growing series features over 400 different wildflowers. Their long-standing commitment to photograph wildflowers has evolved into a meaningful and inspiring documentary art project: Beauty and The Beast: Wildflowers and Climate Change, a Blue Earth Alliance Project. It's beautiful and thought-provoking educational traveling exhibit, "Beauty and The Beast: California Wildflowers and Climate Change" has been viewed by over 44,000 visitors to date. Nita and Rob recently just completed its 264 page companion coffee table book. This beautifully illustrated award-winning volume features 190 photographs and 18 engaging short stories by a diverse and talented group of nature writers and scientists. Both the book and the exhibit focus on inspiring action and offer simple suggestions for climate and conservation action.
Their commitment both professionally and personally to the environment is demonstrated by their receipt in 2006 of a Green Business Certification by the County of Marin. Rob and Nita were the first photographers to receive this certification in Marin.
Rob welcomes assignments and commissions to create images for a client’s specific needs.
